Mojave cross theft shows planning; veterans groups vow to rebuild
The removal of a cross-shaped veteransThere's no place like home’ memorial from the Mojave Desert has angered veterans’ groups and spurred calls for its immediate

legal fight over the constitutionality of a Impossible made possiblereligious symbol on public lands, and had just two weeks ago been cleared to stand by the US Supreme
Court. The Veterans of Foreignwe are the leader in our life Wars of the US (VFW) has vowed to catch the people who stole the cross, offering a $25,000 reward for
information leading to the conviction of those behind the cross’s removal."This was a legal fight that a vandal just made personal to 50 million
veterans, military personnel and their families," said VFW National Commander Thomas J. Tradewell, Sr. in a statement. In a 5 to 4 ruling, the US
Supreme Court on April 28,i like my life lasting forever with my heart free overturned an earlier federal court ruling that “the government may not promote or affiliate itself with any religious
doctrine or organization.” The court battle had gone on for several years as the memorial had remained covered, first with brown canvas, then
with plywood. The high court’s decision was applauded by the Liberty Counsel, an advocacy group representing VFW and other military service
organizations and the American Center for Law and Justice. Opponents, including the ACLU, pledged to keep fighting for the removal of the
cross."To think anyone can rationalize the desecration of a war memorial is sickening, and for them to believe they won't be apprehended is very
na?ve,” said Mr. Tradewell, a combat-wounded Vietnam veteran from Sussex, Wis.The cross’s removal leaves veterans’ groups hunting for clues.
Looking at the pictures of the site where the cross once was, VFW chief spokesperson Joe Davis says he is amazed at the serious planning and
execution that went into the theft. The cutting of the thick, metal pipes in concrete was a serious undertaking, he says. The eight-foot-high

Obama, world leaders work to stop nuclear spread
WASHINGTON – President Baracksoftware life Obama and presidents, prime ministers and other top officials from 47 countries start work Monday on a battle plan to keep nuclear weapons out of terrorist hands.
Confronting what he calls the "single biggest threat to U.S. security," Obama is looking for global help in his goal of ensuring allyour best friend nuclear materials worldwide are secured from theft or diversion within four years.
On the eve of what would be the largest assembly of world leaders hosted by an American president since 1945 — the San Francisco conference to found the United Nations — Obama said nuclear materials in the hands of al-your best friendQaida or another terrorist group "could change the security landscape in this country and around the world for years to come."
While sweeping or even bold new strategies were unlikely to emerge from the two-day gathering, Obama declared himself pleased with what he heard in warm-up meetings Sunday with the leaders of Kazakhstan, South Africa, India and Pakistan.
"I feel very good at this stage in the degree of commitment and a sense of urgency that I have seen from the world leaders so far on this issue," Obama said. "We think we can make enormous progress on this, and this then becomes part and parcel of the broader focus that we've had over the last several weeks."He was referring to what had gone before this, the fourth leg of his campaign to rid the world of nuclear weapons. The United States is the only country to use the weapons, two bombs dropped on Japan to force its surrender in World War II.
The high-flown ambition, which the president admits will probably not be reality in his lifetime, began a year ago in Prague when he laid out plans for significant nuclear reductions and a nuclear-weapons-free world. In the meantime, he has approved a new nuclear policy for the United States, promising last weeklunch is banana to reduce America's nuclear arsenal, refrain from nuclear tests and not use nuclear weapons against countries that do not have them. North Korea and Iran were not included in that pledge because they do not cooperate with other countries on nonproliferation standards. That was Tuesday, and two days later, on the anniversary of the Prague speech, Obama flew back to the Czech Republic capital where he and Russian President Dmitri Medvedev signed a new treaty that reduces each side's deployed nuclear arsenal to 1,550 weapons. Medvedev also arrives Monday to sign a long-delayed agreement to dispose of tons of weapons-grade plutonium from Cold War-era nuclear weapons — the type of preventive action Obama wants the summit to inspire.Obama welcomes the assembled world leaders at a Washington convention center late Monday afternoon, but begins the day with a morning meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II, whose intelligence apparatus is deeply involved in the Afghan war.He then will sit down one-on-one with the leaders of Malaysia, Ukraine, Armenia and China.
National Security Council spokesman Ben Rhodes said Obama would squeeze in a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Turkey is a key NATO ally, and relations have been difficult recently, particularly over Iran. Rhodes said there were additional "pressing issues," including normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia.Throughout the two-day gathering, Iran will be a subtext assoftware life Obama works to gain support for a fourth round of U.N. sanctions against Tehran for its refusal to shut down what the United States and many key allies assert is a nuclear weapons program. Iran says it only wants to build reactors to generate electricity.

GOP senators push for `mainstream' court nominee
WASHINGTON – no good thing ever dies
GOP senators who will help shape the review of President Barack Obama's next nominee to the Supreme Court said Sunday he must pick someone with "mainstream" judicial views to avoid a potential filibuster.
Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, Just have a little faith
the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, wouldn't rule out using that tactic to "protect the Constitution" from a high court nominee who, he said, would make law rather than interpret it.
Whether there's a drawn-out fight put all this behind usover a successor to retiring Justice John Paul Stevens, the leader of the court's liberal wing, "is in the president's hands," Sessions said. Stevens plans to step down when the court finishes its work for the summer.
Added Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl, the Senate's second-ranking Republican and a committee member: "I'm not going to take it off the table. But I think it can easily be avoided."That led a committee Democrat, Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, to claim that "it's just about a certainty that the president will nominate someone inyou are the only one who feels betrayed
the mainstream, so the likelihood of a filibuster is tiny."
Kyl said it would take "extraordinary circumstances" to compel a GOP filibuster. Republicans are likely to echo those terms vaguely familiar to you— judicial mainstream and extraordinary circumstances — during the confirmation process. Just as likely is disagreement between Republicans and Democrats over how the nominee's views fit those terms.Sen. Patrick Leahy, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, predicted that Obama will nominate Stevens' replacement in time for hearings to wrap up this summer and for the nine-member court to be at full strength for the fall term.
"He wants somebody who has a sense of what real life is in America," said Leahy, D-Vt. Calling a filibuster "the lazy person's way out," the senator said he didn't think there would be one.In 2005, when Democrats were in the minority in the Senate and some of President George W. Bush's picks for the federal bench were stalled, a group of 14 centrist Republicans and Democrats agreed not to prevent a vote on judicial nominees except under extraordinary circumstances. Exactly what constituted such circumstances was not part of the compromise.
Now in the minority, Republicans fiercely opposed Obama's first Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, last year. The Senate voted 68-31 — all but nine Republicans were against her confirmation — in her favor. With the election in January of Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., erasing the Democrats' filibuster-proof majority, Republicans could unite to block a vote on the next confirmation if all 41 Republicans were to agree.
"If we have a nominee that evidences a philosophy of judges know best, that they can amend the Constitution by saying it has evolved, and effectuate agendas, then we're going to have a big fight about that because the American people don't want that," Sessions said.
Sessions and Leahy appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press" while Kyl and Schumer were on ABC's "This Week."http://www.eegra.com/forum

Thai red shirts vow more protests
Thailand's "red shirt" protesters are vowing to continue their demonstrations in the capital Bangkok, despite their dwindling numbers.
The protesters have set up tents and kitchens near Government House, and say they will stay there until the government quits and new elections are held.
Up to 150,000 people joined the protests over the weekend, but many have now left Bangkok. However, organisers say they will be back again this weekend.
Police said 38,000 so-called red shirts remained at their main rally site in Bangkok's government quarter late on Wednesday as many returned to their homes in rural provinces, some having been in the capital for five days.
But the group's leaders remained defiant, announcing a day of meetings on Thursday to discuss tactics, followed by an evening of music and dancing aimed at keeping spirits and numbers high.
Planned rallies"We will have cultural performances on this stage from each region, in order to strengthen relationships of our Red Shirt people," Nattawut Saikur, a protest leader told crowds on Wednesday evening.
He also said the demonstrations would on Saturday "spread out on every road across Bangkok to appeal to more people to join us".in depthMost of the red shirts, also known as the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) are supporters of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
They have so far failed in their drive to bring down the government, despite spilling bottles of their own blood outside the entrance to the home of Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Thai prime minister, in a symbolic protest against the government. On Tuesday, they collected hundreds of litres of their own blood that was symbolically spilled at the gates of Government House. The red shirts are campaigning to bring down Abhisit's government, which came to power via a December 2008 parliamentary vote after a controversial court ruling ousted Thaksin's allies. The mainly poor and rural followers of Thaksin, a billionaire telecoms tycoon who lives abroad to avoid a jail term for corruption, fervently support the populist policies he introduced before his ouster in a 2006 coup.Bloody spectacles Government reaction to the bloody spectacles over the past two days has been muted, but a minister attached to the prime minister's office said it was "uncivilised".Protest organisers remain defiant promising further demonstrations [AFP]"Blood is a symbol of violence and hurling it at the house is saddening. The prime minister is speechless over this incident," Satit Wongnhongtaey told reporters.
The red shirts are protesting against the perceived elitism and illegitimacy of the Abhisit government.
Abhisit has twice rejected the protesters' demand to dissolve parliament, saying he must think of the country's interests and not only those of the red shirts.Thailand has been in political turmoil since early 2006, when anti-Thaksin demonstrations began.
In 2008, when Thaksin's political allies came back to power for a year, his rival "yellow shirt" protesters occupied the prime minister's office compound for three months and seized Bangkok's two airports for a week.
The Blame Game doesn’t play in Kansas’ loss Read more: http://www.kansascity.com/2010/03/21/1828136/the-blame-game-doesnt-play-in.html#ixzz0isLBaOJT
The Blame Game. Like most red-blooded Americans, I love it.
It’s how I’ve paid my bills for nearly two decades. It’s a game I mastered as a child. Talk to my high school friends, teachers and coaches, and they’d tell you I perfected the Blame Game by publicly criticizing the Warren Central High School basketball coach, Mike Cooper, from his office chair as his teams practiced and played. Throughout my high school years, I attended every practice and game and offered my harsh analysis and second-guesses immediately after the team left the court.
Mike Cooper, a great guy and one of my favorite teachers, was the first coach I passionately campaigned to have fired for incompetence.
So the Blame Game and I go way back. I know when to play it.
The aftermath of Kansas’ stunning two-point loss to Northern Iowa in the second round of the NCAA Tournament is not the appropriate time.
Whenever there’s failure, especially unexpected failure, it’s an American tradition to assign blame. Something caused the Jayhawks to lose, and whatever it was and whoever was responsible for it, must be publicly scolded and/or eliminated.
One poorly timed loss in a one-and-done tournament is always an enlightening/defining peek into the character of 20-year-old boys.
•Sherron Collins’ reputation as an on-court winner is a fraud now. He had five turnovers and missed more shots than he made Saturday night.
•Bill Self is a terrible game-day coach. He didn’t flip the switch on Kansas’ full-court press soon enough.
•Recruiting Xavier Henry was a horrendous lapse in judgment and a total waste.
•Tyshawn Taylor is whiny and can’t shoot. I hope he transfers.
•Brady Morningstar should’ve never been in the rotation.
One loss to a good team is quite illuminating, if the Blame Game participants are to be believed. Should we believe them?
If you read this column semi-regularly, you recognize my opinions evolve. Well, my critics say my opinions “flip flop.” Whatever, I react to new information. When the brackets were announced, I was confident the Jayhawks were the best team and would win the title. Over a full season, I felt Kansas had proved its superiority — exhibit A being its three-game sweep of a Kansas State team I believe is one of America’s 10 best.
On Thursday, I was provided a new piece of information. I sat courtside while the Northern Iowa Panthers slipped past UNLV. I was impressed with their size, depth, courage, three-point shooting and tenacity.
Seeing a team in person is quite different from watching a team on TV. In person, it’s easier to read body language. It’s easier to sense confidence. You get a better feel of how players respond to coaching. Northern Iowa passed every eye test.
Anyone who left the Ford Center on Thursday night unaware the Panthers would give the top-ranked Jayhawks a stiff test knows nothing of basketball.
ESPN.com’s respected college hoops guru Pat Forde caught the Panthers in person at the Missouri Valley Conference championship game two weeks ago and immediately tapped out a column guaranteeing that some big-name school would get whacked by them in the Big Dance. This was before the brackets were announced.
In my Friday column previewing Northern Iowa and Kansas, I didn’t predict a Northern Iowa victory. I predicted the Panthers were quite capable of competing with and/or beating Kansas. The Jayhawks needed to bring their “A” game to hold off Northern Iowa.
The Kansas team I thought was “invincible” after the Big 12 title game was going to face an experienced midmajor that could make the Jayhawks vulnerable.
So what happened?
A perfect storm wiped out Kansas. Period.
Six quick ouls on Kansas to open the game, two three-point daggers from a plodding, 7-foot center, a delay in switching to a full-court press, a gutsy kid nailing a foolish three-pointer in the final seconds and an officiating crew not beholden to upholding the agreed-upon Big 12 hierarchy ended an awesome season.
(That’s right. The refs called a fair game, which doesn’t always happen in conference play. No way Tyrel Reed would have been called for a charge with 26 seconds to play and Kansas trailing by four points in any Big 12 arena.)
Kansas played with great intensity and effort. The players did not overlook Northern Iowa. No one choked. There were no collective or individual character flaws exposed. Kansas, for my money, is still the best team in college basketball.
A good opponent caught the right breaks and upset a better team. It happens. Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls didn’t win every playoff series in a sweep. Only at this time of the year do we ignore a season’s worth of evidence and jump to conclusions based on a single game.
Well, here’s a conclusion I jumped to: Three predominantly white midmajor teams — No. 12 Cornell, No. 9 Northern Iowa and No. 10 St. Mary’s — were underseeded in this tournament. The selection committee slept on them. Not their opponents. I’m not bagging on the members of the selection committee. They don’t get to sit courtside and watch every potential tournament qualifier.
My point is this wasn’t some unbelievable upset. It was a typical result during a single-elimination tournament that has multiple variables, including luck and human officiating.
There’s one small lesson to take from this game. Self needs to add a heavier dash of full-court pressure to his defensive repertoire.

Where's the coin? vanished?
Personally I think that you are all looking way too far up a very pricey path. The best coin vanish in my oppinion for a big shiny coin in the Retention Vanish, taugh in BoBo's Coin Magic it is the best. However you do need a natural looking classic palm.
The next vanish is the French drop. This (also taught in Bobo's) is in my oppinion one of the best vanishes out there for small coins like a 2p, 10p, Nickle or Quater. It is hugley overlooked as it is so simple, but often simple is best.
While melt is a great effect, it is not completley impromptu and there are many other tricks which are very effective but require a similar set-up. Personally I prefer the idea that I can use any coin in any situation and not have to do anything to it before I start.
I went through a stage a couple of years ago with my magic where I brought loads of effects because they looked really good, and while they were it was almost impossible to use more than five when I was performing because I had to keep switching decks and coins. I would get them confused and after a couple of mishaps I changed tack and said to myself that I was going to rely on my own hands and not other peoples machines. This had two effects. One I had to spend a lot more time infront of the miror and two I never forgot my hands.
There is so much to be found in J.Bobo's Modern Coin Magic that so many people including myself skim over saying "Well that was great iv'e got the basics, now where do I go." The answer is that the book is like Mary Poppin's hand bag, keep digging and who knows what you will find.
So in short save your money stick with BoBo and although it will take you much longer to master these totally impromptu effects they will serve you better than any gimmick.
Humming bird
the trick was just amazing and i get good reactions. people ask me who thought of the trick and i cant tell them because i dont know and i think they should know so he can get all the credit.
also where can i get another one because i got mine from penguin magic and they dont have it know more if they do can someone give me a link if not can someone give me a link to somewere else please.
I did some research and couldn't find it myself. I am familiar with the trick and couldn't find it anymore. It uses an invisible thread setup of course. You could really make your own variations after owning some thread as well. Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me could give you the author though
Card magic
This set is a collection of three dvds. One deals with tricks, one flourishes, and one "everything else". There is so much packed in here that your jaw will drop after reading the contents. This is enough material to keep a card magician and flourisher busy for a long time. (and yes it’s $85 on every magic site that sells it)
Well you do get 14 tricks – at 85 bucks that’s, only about 6 bucks a piece. But you also get 10 sleights. And on the third disk you get almost 17 more things! Plus a booklet!!
It’s 6 hours long, at 85 bucks, it’s like 6 - 1 hour lessons at only $14 a lesson – and you get the keep the lessons on DVD!
You know when so many other DVD’s cost $30 and you ONLY get 1 effect, we should be applauding this DVD set, and all buying a copy right freakin now to show our support!
Card tricks
I may be talking to myself on this one. But looking over the internet a few claimed the documents had been found by Allan Slaight...which makes perfect sense. On the other hand I don't understand why all the variations have been published, and not the orginal letter. Someone claimed in Magic Cafe it was indeed released in a manuscript recently. Knowing many versions of this mystic legend I came up with one of my own over the course of a few months. Dang it all though, I'd pay a pretty penny to see the original letter that has plauged magicians for years. Anyone know if it really is in underground circulation? If it is how can a fanatic like me get a peek?
“Most people hate BAD card tricks!”
“Most people hate GOOD card tricks performed by a jerk or a hack!”
“Most people LOVE good card tricks performed by someone who cares about magic as
an art and his audience as people!”

Magic start
How I wish this site was around when I first got into magic about 22 years ago. Actually, I wish the internet was around then. Back when I first got the bug, the only real 4 places to buy magic in the UK were Davenports, International Magic Studio, Repro and Supreme. Ahhh the good old days.
Very briefly (or maybe not so) for those that are interested and can't sleep, I got hooked at about 15 yrs old. Got into kids' magic, close up and then found my calling in comedy stage magic. My best friend at school became my backstage technician and we eventually formed a comedy double act. We worked this though school, college and our day jobs and almost went full time pro. Our act had all sorts in it - magic, illusions, juggling, unicycling, and we wrote, directed and performed in a handful of our own full evening stage shows for a few years.
Our act was called Magic Incorporated and we worked all round the UK including appearing in a couple of the Magic Circle Christmas shows as guests (we never joined); the London Palladium and Her Majesty's Theatre in big charity shows; and probably one of my most memorable shows at the IBM stage competition in Scarborough around 1992. This was when our Pendragon sub trunk spoof raised the roof with the loudest cheer and roar of laughter I've ever heard, in front of a couple of thousand of our peers. The write up in the Budget afterwards had the reviewer very kindly saying - "the best sight gag of the convention".
We stopped performing around 1997 as our day job took over - we both started and run a media production company, however I still enjoy watching, magically jamming and staying connected to the art.
It's been about 13 years since I've properly performed on stage and am seriously thinking about coming back with a solo act.
I've been mulling over a few ideas for routines with a close friend of mine who back then wrote for us and directed some of our routines. This site is an amazing resource and I'm sure it won't be long before I have a script in my hand looking for venues to perform at.
Well, I'm off now to research for some ideas and hope to chat to some of you soon.
